Chennai, Aug 12: An IndiGo flight operating from Kolkata to Chennai made a safe emergency landing at Chennai airport late Tuesday night after the aircraft reported a left-engine problem and an oil leak, officials said.
Flight 6E-723, carrying 224 people, landed safely on Runway 25 at around 11:37 pm, shortly after the pilot alerted air traffic control about the technical issue.
According to airport officials, the pilot informed Chennai Air Traffic Control at around 11:29 pm, prompting the airport to activate its emergency response arrangements as a precaution.
Fire tenders, medical teams and other emergency personnel were positioned near the runway before the aircraft landed. Despite the reported engine issue, the aircraft completed its approach and landed safely. No injuries were reported.
The airport’s full emergency response was called off at around 11:47 pm. Flight operations at Chennai airport continued normally, with no significant disruption reported.
Following the landing, passengers safely disembarked from the aircraft. Technical engineers then carried out a detailed inspection and subsequently declared the aircraft unairworthy.
The aircraft was moved to a remote parking area for further inspection and repairs. It will remain grounded until the required maintenance work and safety checks are completed.
The incident highlights the importance of established emergency procedures at airports, which allow technical issues to be handled swiftly while ensuring the safety of passengers, crew and airport personnel.
Airport authorities and the airline are expected to complete the necessary technical assessment to determine the cause of the engine issue and oil leak before the aircraft is cleared for further operations.
